On November 21st, the sun entered optimistic and expansive Sagittarius, providing us with some much-needed levity after the intensity of Scorpio season. This December, we're being asked to slow down, reflect on how much we've accomplished in 2024 and dream big for the year ahead.
One of the reasons December is so daydreamy, is because it starts off with Mercury—the planet associated with communication, travel and details—moving retrograde. It's not the best time for serious life decisions, but rather a good time to take a breath and go with the flow as much as you can. Focusing on mindfulness will enable you to avoid the usual frustrations and misunderstandings associated with this clunky transit. Fortunately, December also features two new moons, which also makes it an excellent month for setting intentions and manifestation!
Check out December's key astrological dates to help you prepare for the upcoming month:
December 6—Mars Retrograde in Leo:
Don't be alarmed if you're feeling a little sluggish this December, as it’s likely due to Mars—the planet of motivation—moving backwards in the sign of Leo from December 6th until February 23rd. With both Mars and Mercury in reflective mode this month, it's really important to prioritize patience and practice self-care. In the sign of Leo, retrograde Mars can cause us to feel frustrated about our personal progress, however this transit encourages us to nurture our inner child by returning to creative and competitive hobbies that we've left on the back-burner. Steer clear of the typical retrograde irritations by digging out your paintbrushes or reconnecting with your love of table tennis.
December 7—Venus Enters Aquarius:
Thankfully, Venus' transit through open-minded Aquarius until early January, means we'll have more tolerance towards others this holiday season. Just like the 5th Dimension song ‘Aquarius’, this transit is asking you to embrace harmony and understanding and open up your heart. This is a great time to engage in group meditation or community fundraising to help raise the vibration of the planet.
December 7—Neptune Direct in Pisces:
Since July 2nd, imaginative Neptune has been in reflective mode, causing us to look at our creative aspirations with a more practical focus. While the sobering quality of this transit can be grounding and eye-opening, it can also produce serious creative blocks. Thankfully, Neptune moving direct will dissolve any doubts that are inhibiting our dreams, intuition and artistic expression. This is also a great time to combine creativity with compassion and brainstorm ways to support those in need.
December 15—Full Moon in Gemini:
December's full moon in Gemini feels wonderfully festive as it occurs while social Mercury moves forward in celebratory Sagittarius, and it also connects with Sag's idealistic ruling planet, Jupiter. After a ruminative 3 weeks, we're finally ready to get out and party! That being said, both the Sun and the Moon will square Neptune in Pisces on this day, so it's important to avoid overindulgence and unhealthy forms of escapism around this full moon.
December 15—Mercury Direct in Sagittarius:
After being in a contemplative space for the past few weeks, Mercury's forward movement through expansive Sagittarius inspires us to broaden our minds. Go ahead and sign up for that course of study you've been researching or proceed with those exciting long-distance travel plans! This energy is also perfectly aligned with making New Year's resolutions—especially in the form of a vision board, as Sagittarius is the visionary of the zodiac.
December 21—Sun Enters Capricorn/Winter Solstice:
On this powerful day, the magic of winter arrives, signaling the official beginning of the coldest season in the northern hemisphere, and offering us a chance to slow down and reconnect with our inner spirit. During this time of deep self-reflection, you may receive wise intuitive guidance about who you want to become in 2025, and how your unique skills can leave a positive impact on society.
December 30—New Moon in Capricorn:
December's 2nd new moon is a helping hand from the cosmos! This lucky lunation is encouraging us to pat ourselves on the back for what we accomplished in 2024—and to open up to unexpected changes and opportunities that will surround our work in the year ahead. Pay attention to the intuitive messages you receive at this time as they can help to achieve your goals with greater ease and speed.
